6th Period Chemistry Average Atomic Mass Question

Using the data table provided by your Chemistry Teacher (the dashingly handsome, always amusing, highly intelligent and all-around fascinating Mr. Coleman), make a comment underneath this post in which you answer the following questions:

1. Which of the isotopes listed are the same element? Explain your reasoning.

2. Explain why the mass of each isotope is not a whole number.

Isotopes 1,2,4,5 are the same because there number of protons are the same.
Isotopes 3,6 are also the same because they have the same number of protons.
The masses are not whole numbers because masses are only averages.

ehs soccer .. are you sure those are the ONLY isotopes that are the same? Also .. I'd revaluate the "neutrons" component of your answer.

it would be isotope 1,2,4,and 5 because there number of protons are the same. there mass is not a whole number because the neutrons vary so it would just be an average.

the isotope 3 and 6 are the same, and 1,2,4,5. there protons and electrons are the same.

the mass is not whole cus its an average of all that isotpe.

1) the isotopes that are the same is isotope 3 and isotope 5. i say this because they have the same number of neutrons.

2) All isotopes of an element have a whole number of protons and neutrons. the atomic weight is the average of all the isotopes found, it is affected by the ratios of the different isotopes. If the number was a whole number then no known isotopes have been found

1. Isotopes 1,2,4, and 5 are the same element because they have the same number of protons. Isotopes 3 and 6 are also the same element because they have the same number of protons as well.

2. The mass of each isotope is not a whole number because it is an average of it all and each 3 spots after the decimal make a difference if another element is close to that number. It makes the mass each isotope much more accurate.

the masses arent the same because the masses are just averages.

i think isotopes 2 and 6 are the same because they are the closest protons,neutrons,electrons and mass


the masses were averaged thats why there not whole numbers

1. Isotopes 4 & 5, 1 & 2, and 3 & 6 are the same elements because they have the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons .

2. The mass numbers aren't whole numbers because their the average Atomic Mass so it's an estimated number.

for question #1 i say 3 and 6 are the same because they have the same number of electrons and protons and the mass is almost similar.

for question #2 because they are not rounded.

1. I think 1,4,5 because they have the same protons and electrons.

2.Their not whole numbers because their the average atomic mass number. It's a estimated number.

All of the isotopes are the same. Isotopes 1,2,4,& 5 are the same because they have the same number of protons {24} and the same goes for 3&6 {26} protons.

They aren't whole number because the are averaged numbers.

tyshira .. your intial sentence (all isotopes are the same) seems to contradict the rest of what you stated, but I think I know what you mean. Everything else looks good. You are correct that 1,2,4 and 5 are the same element - and isoptopes 3 and 6 are the same element.

this sentence "all isotopes are the same" seems to mess up what you were say, i have some type of idea. the rest makes sense to me. the answers are right on 1,2,4 and 5 they are the same element and isoptopes 3 and 6 are the same element.

the mass an isotope is not the whole number because the mass is using math equation to get the averages.

1) I think isotopes 1,2,4,5 are all the same because they have the same amount of protons and electrons.

2) The masses aren't Whole numbers because those are the exact weights of the isotope. You could round them if you wanted to.
